Kitchen remodeling in Fort Collins comes in three sizes
The quickest way to price a kitchen is to decide which of three jobs it is. A cosmetic refresh keeps the cabinet boxes and the layout and changes what you see: doors or paint, counters, sink, faucet, backsplash and lights. A mid-range remodel replaces cabinets and counters but keeps the sink, range and refrigerator where they are. A full remodel moves things: the sink to an island, the range to an outside wall for a vented hood, or a wall out to join the kitchen to the living room.
| Scope | Typical cost | What it usually includes |
|---|---|---|
| Cosmetic refresh | $10,000 to $25,000 | Paint or reface cabinets, new counters and sink, backsplash, lighting |
| Mid-range remodel | $25,000 to $60,000 | New cabinets and counters in the same layout, flooring, appliances |
| High-end remodel | $60,000 to $130,000 | Layout change, custom cabinets, an island with plumbing, premium appliances |
| Fort Collins median job (Census) | $13,460 | Middle half $5,390 to $26,950; includes small and owner-done work |

In an older house with a closed kitchen, the value is usually in the layout; in a newer house, in Fort Collins or out in Windsor, the cabinets and finishes are usually the whole job. The full line-item breakdown is on the kitchen remodel cost in Fort Collins page.
What a Fort Collins kitchen remodel needs a permit for
Cabinets and countertops on their own don't need a permit in Fort Collins: the City lists them, with painting, tiling and flooring, as exempt finish work, while noting that exempt does not mean exempt from the code. A kitchen becomes a residential remodel permit as soon as it alters the room or its systems, which covers a new island sink, a relocated range or gas line, new circuits for appliances and lighting, and any wall that comes out.
- No permit: new cabinets in the same spots, new counters, backsplash tile, paint, flooring, a sink or faucet swap with no pipe changes.
- Permit: moving the sink or dishwasher, adding an island with plumbing or power, a new range circuit or gas line, a vented hood through the wall.
- Permit plus a structural license class: removing or cutting a wall that carries load (see the open concept page).
- One permit for the whole job: when more than one trade is involved, Fort Collins wants a remodel permit, not separate trade permits.
The fee follows the job's value: $105 for the first $2,000, then $15.50 per $1,000 up to $25,000, $10.50 per $1,000 to $50,000 and $6.50 per $1,000 to $100,000. The Fort Collins bathroom and kitchen permit guide has the table and the inspections.

Layout, storage and lighting
Lighting is where most remodeled kitchens gain the most for the least. In the National Kitchen & Bath Association's 2026 report, natural light (95 percent), quality light (93 percent) and task light (92 percent) were the design priorities homeowners ranked highest, ahead of any finish. Under-cabinet lights over the work surface and a separate switch for the island pendants are easy to add while the walls are open.
Islands and storage
An island earns its place when there is at least a comfortable walkway on every working side; in a narrow galley it often works better as a peninsula. Tall pantry cabinets and deep drawers in place of base-cabinet doors usually add more usable storage than more upper cabinets. The kitchen cabinets page compares stock, semi-custom and custom lines, and cabinet refacing and painting covers keeping the boxes you have.
Counters
NailThePrice's Fort Collins kitchen page calls quartz the most popular counter, laminate the cheapest and marble the premium choice. Quartz needs no sealing; granite and quartzite suit people who want natural stone; butcher block and laminate keep a budget kitchen honest. Prices per square foot are on the kitchen countertops page.
How a kitchen remodel in Fort Collins runs
- 1Measure and settle the layout
Sink, range and refrigerator locations decide whether plumbing, gas and venting move. Keeping them saves money; moving them is where a kitchen budget grows.
- 2Order cabinets first
Cabinets carry the longest lead time, so they are measured and ordered before demolition. Counters are templated later, on the installed boxes.
- 3Permit and protect the house
Alterations and new circuits go on one Fort Collins remodel permit. Pre-1978 homes add lead-safe practices for any painted wall or trim that gets cut.
- 4Tear out and rough in
Old cabinets, counters and flooring come out, then supply, drain, gas and wiring changes are made and inspected before the walls close.
- 5Install and template
Cabinets are set level and fastened, the counter fabricator templates from them, and appliances are fitted while the stone is cut.
- 6Counters, backsplash and finish
Counters and the sink go in, then the backsplash, lighting and trim, and a permitted job closes with the final inspection.
