Is Fort Collins Water Hard? What It Means for Showers

Fort Collins water is not hard: Fort Collins Utilities says its supply from the Poudre River and Horsetooth Reservoir is naturally soft because it starts as snowmelt and rain, and Loveland says softeners aren't necessary for its customers. For a bathroom remodel that changes a few decisions, from whether to budget a softener to how much frameless glass and matte black hardware make sense.

Is Fort Collins water hard? What the City says

Fort Collins Utilities draws its drinking water from two surface sources: the upper Cache la Poudre River, fed by rain and snow on the eastern slope of the Continental Divide northwest of town, and Horsetooth Reservoir, filled with water delivered from the Colorado River basin through the Colorado-Big Thompson Project. Its 2025 Water Quality Report says that water "has a low mineral content and is naturally soft because it comes from snowmelt and rainfall."

What soft water changes in a bathroom remodel

  • A softener is usually an unnecessary line in the budget for a house on City water.
  • Frameless glass and large panels are easier to keep clear; a squeegee handles the soap film.
  • Matte black and brushed fixtures show fewer mineral marks than in hard-water towns.
  • Shower valves and cartridges see less scale buildup over the years.
  • Grout and stone still need sealing where the manufacturer calls for it; soft water doesn't change that.

Soft water and corrosion

The same report notes that untreated soft water can be corrosive, and that Utilities treats it to help prevent corrosion of water mains, service lines and home plumbing. That happens at the treatment plant, not in your house, so it doesn't change the fixtures you choose.

Outside Fort Collins Utilities

Not every house near Fort Collins is on City water. Some are served by other water districts, and some rural homes use wells, whose hardness can be very different. In Loveland, the City says softeners aren't necessary for its customers. In towns such as Berthoud, check the provider named on the water bill. The annual water quality report lists hardness, and a test kit answers it for a well.

Fort Collins Water and Your Bathroom: Questions

Inlet Bay at Horsetooth Reservoir.
Is Fort Collins water hard?

No. Fort Collins Utilities' 2025 Water Quality Report says its source water 'has a low mineral content and is naturally soft because it comes from snowmelt and rainfall.' The City draws from the upper Cache la Poudre River and Horsetooth Reservoir.

Do I need a water softener in Fort Collins?

Usually not on City water, because the supply is naturally soft. Homes served by a well or by a water provider other than Fort Collins Utilities should check that provider's water quality report or test before buying one.

Is Loveland water hard?

Loveland's utility says water softeners aren't necessary for City of Loveland Utilities customers because its water is soft compared with other systems, and it publishes hardness in its monthly drinking water analysis.

Will frameless shower glass spot in Fort Collins?

Less than in hard-water cities. Spots on glass are mostly dissolved minerals left behind as water dries, and soft water carries fewer of them; soap film still builds up, so a squeegee after showering keeps clear glass clear. Glass coatings help too.

Is soft water bad for plumbing?

Untreated soft water can be corrosive, which Fort Collins Utilities notes in its report, and the utility treats the water to help prevent corrosion of mains, service lines and home plumbing. That treatment happens before the water reaches the house, so there is nothing for a homeowner to add.

How do I check my own water?

Find your water provider on the bill and read its annual water quality report, which lists hardness in milligrams per liter or grains per gallon (one grain per gallon is about 17.1 mg/L). For a private well, a simple hardness test kit or a lab test gives the number.
